First Impressions

Vulkan Gi

I never thought I would like the color of an unbleached gi until I saw this one. Then shortly after, I saw another gi brand that was unbleached and of course I loved it too.

When pulling it out of the bag I thought “Wow….so this is what it looks like in person.” That raw and gritty looking gi looking back at me. There were no smells, no bleached color. It resembles a hemp gi but it’s not made of hemp, raw cotton is what this kimono is made of.

This really is a bare bones gi jacket in an eggshell white color but it’s a real eye catcher as well

Vulkan GiJacket stretched out, you can see there aren’t any patches besides the two on the shoulders that read “Vulkan Eco Training”

There is a slight discoloration stain on the weave as well. It’s coming out at the same rate of the other one.

Armpit

The armpit reinforcement is standard as wellbottom collarstitch

This collar….man oh man this freakin’ collar. One word describes it.

AMAZING!!!!!

It is super stiff and thick as well and is a monster of a collar. I wish all gi’s had this collar.

Jacket Conclusions:

The jacket has a regular white stitching and no extra reinforcements but it still feels super solid. There isn’t really a lot to say or showcase about the jacket because it really is bare bones.

The construction and all seams of the gi are well made and after the last few weeks it’s looking like it will stand up to a tough schedule. I am happy with the construction of the gi and the design as well.

Pants Details

  • 12 oz canvas cotton pants
  • two belt loops
  • Unbleached color
  • No Additives or Chemicals

Design of Pants

pantsfoldedA very simple size tag on the pants with a flat drawstring. I’m not a huge fan of the flat drawstrings for the pants and there is a reason why.

beltloopsTwo belt loops to secure the drawstring

pantsstainA small stain on the pants as well, it’s now out after a few washes.

insideofgussetTriple stitched in the gusset for reinforcement!

Pants Conclusion

Much like the top, there isn’t much to say about the pants because there isn’t a ton of extra detail or contrast stitching. What these pants do boast is great stitching on critical parts that are more prone to tear or rip.

The flat drawstring though is a bit of a pain to untie as it gets damp from sweat. I do have to retie my pants after two rolls due to the drawstring not staying correctly.

Fit of the Gi

The gi feels looser than what I’m used to but when you look at the pictures it doesn’t look that loose at all. It looks like a great fit actually. It’s legal for the IBJJF in terms of length but I’m not sure of the color?

Rolling Performance

The gi does it’s job super well when rolling. It doesn’t stretch out like a lot of the reviews I’ve read on Vulkans do. It feels super light, incredibly soft, and has a monster of a collar that is awesome to break grips and choke with.

There is only one problem while rolling. It smells.

It was described to me as “Dirty hippie”. It doesn’t have a smell while sitting in your closet or traveling…just when you start rolling.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “Maybe you’re a stanky mofo and it’s you that stank, not the gi.”

I too have thought of that but thanks to Gi soap and the fact that I wash my gi’s (and myself) right after I get home from training I know it’s not me….this time.

I actually asked Mr. Knust from Vulkan (commercial manager who has been SUPER helpful in any question I have had no matter how dumb it’s been. A++++ Customer service on his part) about the smell and he replied to me with:

“The smell will definitely be that dirt/ raw cotton smell for sure! There will be no additives as I say, so there is no way to cut that raw aspect off of the gi, unless we do a weave seal, but that means: Not Raw/ Eco anymore! It is the option of going Eco Friendly. As I mention before, this gi a Nature Friendly and also Human Friendly as well. No Alergies on the skin or anything related.”

Final Thoughts

I personally have looked at Vulkan for a while and always thought I wouldn’t fit right in their gi’s. The sizing chart looked weird for me was the main reason I never gave them a chance.

That was a dumb mistake on my part and I won’t ever not purchase a gi I want based on their sizing chart.

For $150 the gi is about the norm for most gi’s coming out these days and some are a lot more plain than this one and don’t have as good of quality.

All of the stitching is straight, trust me I had to look super close to see the stitching due to the color of the gi, and all stress points are solid as well.

I don’t solidly agree with the price tag of $150, I think it could go a little lower than what it is all things considering and hopefully Vulkan will read this and go a little lower.

Final thoughts are Vulkan got exactly what they looking for with their Eco Training Gi. They made a very eco friendly gi and if you’re a fan of non bleached gi’s then by all means you should get this gi. You won’t be disappointed in the quality of the gi.
