Originally from Ireland but based in Australia, Patches O’ Toole is trying to bring a new life to the BJJ Gi Patch world by offering up some fresh designs and a unique twist with their products. They go into more detail about their style in their Evolution of BJJ Patch Design article here.

Patches O’ Toole offers free shipping on all of their patches as well as a warranty should anything happen to your patches from the normal wear and tear, not that would though as these patches are 100% embroidered. . Not many companies who sell patches have this type of a policy so kudos to Aengus for that effort.

On a separate but awesome note, Aengus and his wife are moving to London soon so that means their patches ordered from the US and Europe will be getting to you sooner. The post from Australia takes a little bit to receive.

Styles

  •  Living the BJJ Lifestyle

The typography was executed fantastically on this patch. “Dedicated to those who practice the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle, trying to make themselves into a better person, both on and off the mats.”

It’s a clean and simple, no frills patch showing that you love the lifestyle you’re practicing.

  • Day of the Dead

The text on the top banner translates to ’embraced to death’, a reminder to tap early from Aengus and crew. Very well designed and people who love the style of sugar skull type of designs will be stoked to rock this patch.

  • Mans Ruin –

Right off the bat I liked this patch. In homage to the Sailor Jerry/Erik Maaske style of tattoo designs, I appreciate what they were striving for with this image. The attention to detail on the females tattooed arms is pretty awesome all things considered.

Some people won’t like this or will be offended by it unfortunately. I for one can not wear it to my academy due to the nature of the patch and that kids are around for a good bit of the time I am in class but I will have this on one of my bags because I still want to sport the patch.

  • The Old War Horse –

This is by far my favorite of the patches. The official description of the patch sums it up pretty well

Dedicated to all the old war horses that show up on the mats day in day out. Fingers taped, ears bashed and gi’s well worn. It takes many years to earn this badge, so wear it with pride.

All of these patches have the plastic heat seal backing so there are no loose threads from constant wear and tear.

Final Conclusions

The patches are a bit on the higher end price side, but when you factor in they’re coming from Australia, the free shipping, and the warranty I think it’s a great deal. You can save even more money right now and buy all four of the patches for $70 USD.

The embroidered woven material is done excellently, and show no signs of use after the weeks I have been using them. Patches O’ Toole have done a great job with these patches and I’m excited to see what else they’re coming out with in the near future.

They just released their Living the BJJ Lifestyle t shirt to go along with their patch so if you dig the design, go grab it before they’re gone.
